DVD Special Features

I love all the special features as I'm a bit of a trivia buff, so the more the merrier as far as I'm concerned. I do listen to the commentaries but admit that they don't usually have much of a repeatability factor about them. Same goes for some of the other extras you get, although I do love seeing how big set-piece scenes in movies like Transformers are put together.

I hear they are bringing out some DVRAB with extra on disc 2 like alternate endings from Titanic (the ship does not sink), Valkyrie (Hitler and the Tom Cruise character fall in love and run away together), and Jaws (killer shark chokes on a discarded tesco shopping bag). If there are any more I'd be glad to hear them

My personal favourite 'special features' are the subtitles (so many different kinRAB!), closely followed by those interactive menus that enable me to chose what part of the film to watch. Another high point is the cinema trailer for the very same film I'm watching... This always a highlight for me.

I was wondering what was the point in those three disc collector edition DVRAB that always seem to be being released. Personally, I don't see the point watching deleted scenes from a film. If they were any good they would be in the film.

Not necessarily. Distributors and production companies sometimes cut perfectly good scenes from a film so that its running time is short enough for them to squeeze in an extra cinema screening each day letting them make more money. This also allows them to use the advertising hook for the dvd release of saying that the dvd has 'scenes not shown in the cinema'.

Also, some films, such as (the admittedly troubled) Highlander II were given different edits in different countries due to the fact that so many companies had a slice of the pie and bickered about what the final film should look like. There are versions that run at 89, 100 and 109 mins in length. I certainly don't think that the 20 mins missing from the 89 min (British) version were scenes that were not good enough for the film. IMHO that particular edit is the worst of the lot.

I think everyone will watch deleted scenes, But me personally I've only ever listened to one audio commentary, Which was Snatch. IMO if you love the film you'll love the commentary, its hilarious! But a lot of the time it depenRAB on the film for what I watch.

I've been into extras since the days of Laserdisc.

But I rarely listen to entire commentaries with a few exceptions - most of the time I listen to selected bits.

Most extras on modern films are all the same PR puff and boring.

I like extras on older films like the Bond movies where time has passed and cast and crew can give genuine views on what the film was like.

No actor in a new film is going to say anything except how superb the cast was and what a genius the director was - thats why for most modern films I usually only watch out takes - cant even be bothered with deleted scenes most of the time - and they are not worth bothering with if there is no director commentary to explain where they should fit and why they were deleted

Just started watching my Who dvd's and the black and whites are better viewed with the production subs on - more interesting than a lot of the episodes.

Doubt I will listen to many commentaries at all and will only listen to snippets of those I do.

Yes, I always watch the DVD extras and the amount of them will often sway my decision to buy over another release.

There are some great featurettes out there, and some movie companies could do with taking note. I like features on TV shows the best.

I must admit i'm a sucker when it comes to audio commentaries. When i'm thinking of buying a dvd i will check to see if there is an audio commentary track included. If not then i will see what other features are on the dvd or i will just not buy the dvd.
