During meiosis, is there a reason why four daughter cells are created?

I understand the process in which the four are made, and why four are produced, but are all four daughter cells used? What happens to them after they are produced?
 
During meiosis, the DNA is replicated. Since each daughter cell only needs half of one copy, and there are 2 full copies available, there must be 4 daughter cells.
