This is another moral question about if I have done the right thing to correct a situation. You see, I have a step father who lacks the ability to handle and store knives safely. He has been told by my mother, me and the rest of the family not to be so careless and on a constant basis. He still does not seem to care and has yet to change his habits.
Recently, I paid a visit and ended up staying the night over. When this happens, I often do some chores just to be a good guest. The one chore I often do is wash the dishes for him. They never have asked asked me to do it and I don't mind doing it. I see as good manners. The main complaint I have is he stores the knives in the dish washer in the upright position. Nothing wrong with this in itself, but these knives are difficult to see amongst the clutter of the other silver ware, thus increasing the chances of an accident happening. Since talking about it to him doesn't seem to work, I decided to cover the blades in duct tape as a practical joke in hopes of it may teach him a lesson. I often found out from past experience when reason doesn't work, humor does.
I also included this letter:
Dear Dad,
I have decided to give you a pair of "blade safety training knives" for your very own.
I have done this because every time I clean out the dishwasher, the knives are stored in the upright and in a very unsafe position.
Doing this increases the chance of someone accidentally hurting themselves. This includes Mom, me and you. As both my mother and I can tell you, having our hands accidentally sliced open is not pleasant. Please store your knives POINTING DOWN next time you put them in the dishwasher. Thank you.
This includes butter knives.

P.S
The next time I come across the unsafe handling of knives around the house, I am going to call the US Bureau of Cutlery Safety Services so they can come and take your knives away and put them into a foster care. Just like children, such abuse and neglect of cutlery is something one should not stand for and I honesty think such knives would be better off in a more nurturing home.
Did I do the right thing and was how I handled it funny or just being mean?
I would include a picture of said knives but my camera broke.
