Ducks and Rodents

Is there any background story as to why Rodent and Duck characters used to be so popular?

I look at a lot of old cartoon movies and shows and noticed they featured some type of rodent or ducks (An American Tail, The Secret of NIHM, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Duck Tales, etc).

Were they popular only because of Mickey and Donald? Why not Goofy? I don't think there were a lot of dog characters like him.
 
A lot of those films and series you mentioned are Disney films/series. And Mickey and Donald always made them the most money, so why not make even more animals characters like them (rodents and ducks)?:shrug:
 
Well about the ducks, Donald had a lot of relatives so that is where shows like Ducktales and Darkwing Duck came from. As for mice, I have no idea.
 
Mickey has a lot of relatives, too. As to why mice are so common in cartoons, we'll they're small plus they're stereotypically the prey of cats. That lends itself to cartoons and features.
