Coming from Jap sportbikes to the 848 I can say it's a totally different ball game with Ducati. Ducati offers you a fragile supermodel that is beautiful and classy. However, after you get down and dirty with her you realize that the high maintenance and cost feels only as good as a cheap butter-face. Sometimes the butter-faces actually feel better because without the looks they gotta make up for it with extra performance.

The difference is when you tell your friends you just manhandled the supermodel they all give you mad props as anyone could manhandle the butter-face.
 
I agree with you on the Jap bikes lasting forever. I use my R1 for commuting and i love it. Fast, reliable and shoot all i have to do is change the oil and lube the chain.

You don't own a Duc because you want reliability?. I can't speak for everyone. For me its the handling on the track and well I tend to hold on to a Duc much longer than a Jap bike. I kept my 916 for a long time (98-2008) till i sold it. Japanese bikes well I keep on an average 2-3 years before i let them go.

Obviously you would have to track a Duc to understand. Its kind of like japanese car handling vs euros. Hands down the euros have it.

If you want reliability go buy a Honda.
 
oh yeah my 916 well over 60k miles street and track. only thing was oil, cambelts and valve adjustments, tires and brakes and the usual stuff.
 
I love my Duc as well, though she does have more 'needs' than my ZX-10R. I would never, ever consider getting rid of her, and even if I did, my wife would shoot me lol.
 
been there before and I feel your pain man, I've had so many issues, but I love my ducs, there were detinately several times where I really wanted to slam ducati tho, but eventually they pulled through for me and made things right
 
I think of it this way... I could own a $250,000 Ferrari and drive the hell out of it. It is truly a work of art and only a certain few can afford to own one of the finest Italian machines/works of art on the road. On the flip side, I could buy a $65,000 Japanese built Nissan GTR that will more than likely beat out the Ferrari in all aspects of performance. The GTR is a nice, easily maintained sportscar, and although its not the best example because its still a new vehicle and not the easiest to come by, its still a Nissan. Either way, my point is this... I would pick a Ferrari anyday of the week over a Nissan. I can also assure you of another thing, when I drive past in that beautiful red Italian beast (be it the Ferrari or My 1098) EVERYBODY who knows what it is, and even some that dont, will wish they were lucky enough to be me!
 
Ducati superbikes' got more style than Jap sportbikes and the performance is too far apart. However, if I can only keep one bike I would ditch the Ducati and keep my MV Agusta because it is even more exotic in every way.
