There is nothing wrong with fixing/maintaining your own bike. In fact you will find it very rewarding. All that it will take is a small investment in some basic tools (maybe a few not so basic tools) and a factory repair manual, then, have at it. If you make a mistake once or twice you will eventually get it right.
 
...is it unrealistic for me to? learn to maintain my own ducati?? i realize this is very hypothetical, and apologize for that, but you would think ducati inc. would actually want to sell bikes, as opposed to price gouging the customers, thanks for any feedback, mark in san antonio
 
Owning a Ducati is like dating a platinum blonde. Fun to ride, lots of stares but expensive to maintain.

I have a '98 Speed Triple that has had one problem in our many years together; 3 relays went out simultaneously. Once diagnosed, they were cheap (ish) and easy to replace.

Her name is Lilly, 'cuz she's a delicate little flower...
 
Ducati do want to sell bikes, but you have to have the money to get them up. I would talk a course and buy books to learn how to work on it yourself. I have a friend that has an old one and he has someone do the work for him, and your right it isn't cheap. They are a good bike, especially for long rides.
 
quite honestly you'd be better off just buying a japanese bike. They're just as fast, reliable and aesthetically pleasing.

Learning to maintain it yourself? time consuming.
 
you're right! I have been preaching this for a long time!
Ducati's are unreliable, require a lot of maintenance, are expensive to repair and parts are out of this world, and Ducati dealers don't stock any parts, they have to order everything!
Buy any of the 4 major Japanese brands ( Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki )
They will have a bike that competes and succeeds and is much more reliable than any Ducati

note: did you look at the Suzuki SV650-1000, V Strom's they are a better Japanese copy of the Ducati
