Dry clutch ques.

Hello,

I have a noob question. I apologize if they seem dumb.

Is it true that the dry clutch (in the 1098, eg) with the stock clutch cover is just as quiet as the 848 with the wet clutch?

They guys around here that I know with Duki's all have open clutch covers. (They like the sound!)

I'm not particularly excited about the loud idle sound of the dry clutch.

I do, however, like the sound of my pipes(stock) at idle on my 848.

I ask, because I like my 848 so much, I'm thinking about getting a 1098s (there's a red one just waiting for me locally. )

The dry clutch with a closed cover is louder than a wet clutch but not so bad that it takes away from the sound of the exhaust. I was like you initially and wanted to hear the Termi's and not the clutch, i soon came around and realized the sound of both in harmony is even better and more distinctive. Keep in mind that a dry clutch will get louder with wear as it rattles around in the clutch basket.

Embrace it....My 748 is is much louder than my S4Rs which 7 years older. I like when I get that look from people like my engine is falling apart. It's all part of the DUCATI growl!

I did see a bumber sticker once that said, "Loud clutches save lives".

The dry clutch chatter was what first stirred me away from Ducati. I remember thinking that the 999 next to me was gonna fall apart or explode. Now I love the sound so I have an open cover on my 1098s.

I have to agree with 10-6 on his comments about the comparison.

Being a old Ducati enthusiant with my first one in 1960 (before publicaly dry clutches were sold to the masses) I do not like the open clutch sound. I do like the looks but not the sewing machine sound with a knock knock here and a knock knock there. Of course it does hide other sounds as loose valve clicking and rods knocking. I could even like the clutch chatter if one could get rid of the knocks......wonder why Harley dry clutches do not knock??
I "would" like to have a clear closed cover with all the fancy looking hardware inside to look at. That is one of several projects on my mind when I get the time. I prefer not cutting my stock cover up so I guess when I get to it I will just make a mold off the stock cover and make one out of fiberglass and add some Lexan to it.

PS: besides putting on the open cover your either going to need to either paint a few clutch items or get SS springs and a anodized clutch hub and cover or after a while its going to be nasty looking from rust here and there

Are you kidding me? Open that bitch up and let it breathe! Sounds like a fork in a garbage disposal and I LOVE it. Tack on some Termi pipes and it's just bad. I love the "man your bike is f'd up" comments.

LOL at you guys.......I hear your words but will stay with what I like..... quiet clutches and loud ass opened up stock cans with plenty of money left in the pocket that girls really love putting their hands in to so they can dig it out!!

The devil mad me say that....sometimes I do act like I am 29 and still trying to hold everything in sight, rothfl.

These days I prefer just holding my money and try to make it work for me.

Money digging women and loud knocking clutches I have the power to do something about in my world at least, I follow no one......I guess that comes with old age??

Sure would like to get a slipper clutch though.....big time!.....there goes my money ...again....something is going to get it one way or the other. lol

A I said, I really like the clutch plate chatter sound (that to me is racey). The knocks coming from the plates rattling in the basket with no load on them I want no part of beyond what sounds come from a solid cover.
