Driving an Automatic- Arguing with friend...?

So I have this friend who ive been driving around and he says that the D with the circle around it is the regular drive. However, when i was taught to drive, i was told it was the overdrive. I have on my car, P-park, R- reverse, N-neutral, (D)- "overdrive", D- drive, and L-never use it. Am I right? we got into a bit of a fight over it.
 
you are correct you should keep it in D in the city and overdrive when you get on the highway
