Drilling is good!

Well, I took a chance and drilled the baffles on my 06 S50. I didn't drill all the holes yet that the print said to, but I must admit, I'm considering drilling the rest of them. I drilled a 1/2 inch hole through the center baffle and a 1/2 inch hole through both the outer and inner plates between the rivets. The sound is much more throaty and considerably louder, but not obnoxious. The print shows 2 more 1/2 inch holes between the other rivets through both plates. I may continue with more at a time to see what difference each will make to the sound of the bike. So far I've had no backfiring or popping, no symptoms evident of the bike running lean. Thanks to Hot4teacher for the advice and drilling prints.

I'm not sure about removing the baffles all together, I don't know how to even if I decided to go that far. I wonder if that would make the sound to loud?

Don't thank me, thank Dr. Bob!! He's the one who advised me. I've left the baffles. I like the sound as it is. Like you said, it's not obnoxious, but I love how it sounds under overpasses and on bridges.

Good job!

The de-baffle video is irrelivant, as the S50/ Intruder 800 do not have traditional baffles, they have silencer plates. The exhaust is completely different from the C50 or M50- the motor too, for that matter. But the mod works on any year VS800(intruder 800/ S50), 1992 to 2009.

There is no need to rejet. I put 135,000 miles on one VS800 with drilled pipes, and almost 100,000 on another, and never touched the carbs on either. If anything, Intruders run a touch rich when you drill them out, as long as you do not drill the innermost (3d) plate. If you drill that innermost one, you will have to rejet, and the bike really does not sound "good", just really loud.

what if you were to just drill the 3 holes on the..... end plate???... um....
The first plate you see while looking down the muffler, if I drill the 3 holes in that would there be any difference in sound?? I dont want to take a hole saw to anything just yet.

The holes would make the exhausts louder but possibly not what you want. IIRC we had a member about a year ago drill out a VTX1300 per a known mod circulating the internet and didn't like the results. I don't remember all the details though. It's a roll of the dice, drilling may not sound like you want, some if not most bikes would require re-jetting (or new FI settings,) and so on.

Now from what I've read on the forums is that drilling holes "should" give you a deeper sound, not really louder just deeper and if you drill or even debaffle you "should" not need to mess with the FI. I can't find anybody thats just done the first step of just drilling the holes. I will post in the M50 area I guess, thanx for your help :bluethum:
