Dreamworks is making a movie based on troll dolls.

Respect for...company...dropping...

I always thought those trolls were scary. Nothing that haunted me in nightmares, but nothing that I would willingly play with all day. Seems like the Danish company just wants more people to buy their stuff and Dreamworks just wants to make money. Thus, this.

And..."expand on the troll dolls? mythology"? Clearly I'm missing something, so could someone fill me in on whatever story surrounds those things? It sounds like Dreamworks is just sugar-coating everything, making Trolls sound deeper than it was ever intended to be.

Why doesn't this company realize that they need movies of "How to Train Your Dragon" Quality and not movies that are "Shrek the Third" quality?
 
Lol, Dreamworks thinks the movie gained so much because it's about toys and not about characters, and characters many people have grown up with and loved and shared with their kids to boot.

I'd be embarrassed if I had executives that dumb at my company.
 
And it'll be called Trollz* and the teaser trailer will feature the characters striking "gangsta" poses while wearing hoodie sweatshirts and sunglasses and "Wild Thing" blares on the soundtrack. :sad:

*Alternate title: Plaything Tale.
 
I don't like to judge movies with nothing more than the concept to go on and there is a chance that DreamWorks could pull this off, but it's pretty slim.

The Troll dolls have been around for a while, but they kind of had their moment of highest popularity decades ago and I don't think there's enough to them to make them a good nostalgia property. DreamWorks isn't so much going to have to "expand on the Troll dolls mythology" as create it from the ground up.

I agree that it's frustrating to see DreamWorks start to make progress with films like Kung-Fu Panda (which I saw and liked) and How To Train Your Dragon (which I haven't seen yet, but heard good things about) and then take what looks like a giant step backwards with this film. Assuming moviegoers realize that this isn't a Pixar spinoff about the Troll dolls that appear briefly in the Toy Story films (which may be what DreamWorks is hoping for), this is going to be seen as a pale imitator of either the Toy Story films or The Smurfs a movie which doesn't look very good ot begin with.
 
I will judge a movie once I hear more about it and I see a couple trailers. Although the concept doesn't jump out at me, I will still give it a chance.
Well Dragons was based off a book.

The Troll dolls debuted in Danemark in 1956 and in the US in 1961. They were the creation of Thomas Dam, a former baker, his son still leads the company his father created.

Initially they had bodies made of matress spring (long story) but the spring were expensive so the creator gambled that the customers liked the whimsical face rather than the springy action and gave them rubber bodies.

They were touted as good luck charms.

In Dutch folklore the Jule-Nissen, or Christmas Troll, stayed with every Dutch family for the 12 days of Christmas as a good luck charm. Children who were kind and nice caused the Troll to stay and fill the house with kindness and peace.

As an aside I don't trust those 'We're developing a movie based on X' news anymore. All the majors have cut their slate in half recently and there is FAR fewer movies being made than ever before... but still the same number of studio executives. So what is an exec to do to look useful? Put a project in 'development' and meet with directors. Basically its just wasting everybody's time to justify their job! So now I only trust news of actual production starting.
