The problem I have with Dreamworks is that many of their films are, for lack of a better work, ugly. Sharktale has one of the worst over all looks I've seen in a major studio production: weird characters that look like the VA's face of a fish body, garish, clashing colors, lack of a unifying style. There was an episode of the Backyardigans that was under water, and that looked better than Sharktale. Ants had characters who looked like shriveled raisins, and Shrek, well, I guess the point is that they are ugly (except Puss). But besides the actually appearance of the characters, their movies just fail to create a pleasing look to them. Even though the animals in Over the Hedge were pretty good, the people were awful.
The only time a film visually came together was Kung Fu Panda. The backgrounds were perfectly stylized, the character design was good (strangely enough, the main characters, Po and Shifu, had, IMO the weakest character design, while Viper and Crane had the best), and there was an over all palate of reds and jade greens that fit the Chinese setting. The intro and credits actually upstage the movie because the smooth traditional animation is a pleasant change from a string of CGI productions.
