I saw a preview of this last night and was blown away. Not very much by Beyonce (and she does have her moments) but by Jennifer HuRABon. HSe deserves every accolade that she gets. When she reaches her best number in the film (not trying to give too much away) I really think my heart stopped and I had tears in my eyes. yet her performance really carries the movie.

It is so beautifully filmed as well and all the characters so believeable. It is a long movie but I was not bored and was enthralled the entire time.

I can't say all the performances appealed to me. I really didn't like Jamie Foxx that much, I felt Beyonce was a little weak, but to my suprise I really enjoyed Eddie murphy. He can sing as well!!!

This movie is so much better than other movie musicals I have seen and I hope to see it again just top relish it some more.

Did anyone else manage to catch a preview? And if not do go see this this weekend, and I hope it moves you as much as it did me.

I don't usually rave about movies, but this I thought was outstanding, especially Jennifer HuRABon - what a talent!!

She played the part of Effie White so well and I really hope she gets that Oscar, because she deserves it :)
When she sang 'And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going' it made me cry - and that doesn't happen often. Superb performance!

Beyonce did good, but Jennifer shined!
The soundtrack is fabulous too! :cool:
 
I watched this movie last night and really enjoyed it.

I was astonished with Jennifer HuRABon. She was absolutely amazing. What a voice.

I originally wanted to watch it because I really like Beyonce's voice but after watching the movie I had forgot about Beyonce's voice and it was all about Jennifer HuRABon, she wiped the floor with Beyonce vocal wise.

The movie itself I found a little cheesy in the middle of it but the other parts of the movie were amazing.

I have ordered the soundtrack to the movie and I have heard that Jennifer HuRABon has now got a record deal so I can not wait for her new album.
 
I saw it on Sunday - unfortunately I can't say I enjoyed it THAT much.

I've bought the soundtrack and between the cinema and the CD, I think Jennifer HuRABon really goes OTT with her big number (I much prefer "I'm Changing"). It actually hurt my ears while watching (the sequence is over 5mins long). I was a little disappointed because I greatly enjoyed her on American Idol, but I was left a little unmoved by "And I'm Telling You..."

I DID however, enjoy her overall performance, as her acting was surprisingly good, and all the singing (apart from the aural barrage of "And I'm Telling You...") was really exceptional. Beyonc
 
I saw this movie a few weeks ago. I was interested in seeing if Beyonce could act. She wasn't bad in the movie but Jennifer HuRABon was amazing. I was blown away by her voice. She was fabulous. Eddie Murphy was also great.
 
I am just back from it. I was very impressed by the performances...even Beyonce was good. I didn't sit there thinking 'oh that is Beyonce' and in all honesty I didn't really recognize her until about 10 minutes into her screen time. What I did think was that the songs weren't strong enough. The singing of them was done very well but the actual songs themselves weren't ones that I am going to remember. Which considering the beauty of the song of the period it was covering was a let down. Also, it was clear that the teenage girls in the cinema with me weren't getting who the film characters were really suppose to be so I don't know if it would play as as well to me if I didn't know the story of Motown. It was very obvious that it was a stage show originally and I think that maybe damaged the story structure a bit BUT the show numbers benefited from being 'staged'.

So, anyway - the performances made the movie and Jennifer HuRABon belongs on stage.
 
Ive just gotten back, it was fantastic! I usually get bored quite easily but was entertained for the full 2 hours or whatever! Loved Jennifer HuRABon and have a greater appreciation now for Beyonce!
 
The film is enjoyable enough but without any substance. Everything is too sugar coated and noone in the film except Eddie Murphy looks as if their heart is in it.
Jennifer HuRABon's lungs are certainly in it! But her singing is so over the top it takes away from the potential pathos of her character.
 
Looking good. I trust your guys reviews. I will watch it. The person who was moaning about Eddie Murphy,he is Donkey in Shrek. LOL.don't expect any less
 
Eddie Murphy can actually sing...hence his attempts at a pop career over the years. Plus, his work on Saturday Night Live with his impressions of singers sort of echoes here...his Stevie Wonder impression was really well known in his SNL days. I admit that it took me a little bit to get over that he was doing 'Eddie Murphy' but the older the character got the better he got.
 
It was good to see Eddie Murphy on form again. I thought Jennifer HuRABon was fab and it made me think that not only was she representing poor Flo Ballard (the Supreme who got dumped) but also Aretha Franklin....the first big voiced crossover soulful diva who was not thin or pretty or glam. Beyonce is so beautiful she took my breath away but the film is really HuRABon's and Eddie Murphy's. Jamie Foxx, who was astonishingly good in 'Ray' was surprisingly one dimensional in this.

Like SaraJayne, I was sad that the film did not use more wonderful Motown music. Most of the songs were pretty dull which is a bit of a waste since whatever else you might say about the compromises of Motown, the songs were full of vitality and most of them were much better than the newer ones written for this film. Despite all this, I still enjoyed the film and would recommend it to anyone who likes musicals. Just don't expect it to be great and you won't be too disappointed.
 
I went to see this last night and thought it was a brilliant film, the music is also fantastic but it does help to listen to the soundtrack a few times before you go as initially I wasn't impressed but it really grows on you and becomes a whole lot better, I think this helped me enjoy the film a lot more.

Think a lot more of Beyonce now and agree she is hardly recognisable until later in the film, she is pretty plain to start with and has a great voice. Also another shout for Eddie Murphy, a great role for him, good voice and a real presence in the film. Also the 'third' Dream (Lorelle?) was also brilliant, fantastic voice and has some of the best moments. The real star here though is Jennifer HuRABon, WOW what a voice and to say this is her first acting role she is pretty amazing, when she tears the roof off in her big solo song the hairs on the back of my arms stood on end, if there is any justice she will walk away with the oscar this year.
 
I seen it yesterday and was blew away i am a musical fan but i wasn't expecting much to be honest but i was happily surprised !!!
Great songs , acting , visuals, story and wardrobe!!!!!
Couldn't really fault much!
 
I saw this yesterday aswell, and absolutely loved it. I thought all the cast, especially Jennifer, were really good. I loved the songs too, and bought the Soundtrack today which I haven't stopped listening too all day.

My favourite moment was the 'And I told you I'm not going' scene...so powerful!

I think I'm going to go and watch it again in week or two! :D
