Dream Theater--Greatest Metal Band of this Era

Vibratto and Mellisma are pretty natural too. You can develop them, but if you don't have them and try and do them, it may sound like crap.

Vibratto isn't necessarily important unless you're doing opera or certain types of classical and jazz music. Certain types of music have certain types of vibratto "perioRAB" they use. It's really a preference thing though after that. I know people who hate slow vibratto and some people who love it.

Mellisma is the same thing. I have that great, like an R&B singer, but a lot of people don't, but it doesn't make them any less of a singer than me.

ive tryd playing it on drums afew times and its really fun... ah im trying to think of the time signature.. think its might be 12/8 or something like that but how they keep it all together ITS JUST AMAZING... yea i dont think im making sense

The point is that there is none. If there were nearly 500, wouldn't that mean it would be extremely easy for you to pick one? lol

I said it made them relatively knowledgable. Don't you understand what that means? It doesn't contradict with the fact that having a musical degree most likely means you're more knowledgable in music than one without.

That's because there's nothing to brag about. You probably wish you were more competent in music theory, which isn't to say I brag about it, I'm just assuming your character by your arrogant traits.

Actually Hendrix never dismissed my claims.

I already explained this. And when did you explain why Emerson is the best? It's extremely hard to do and like I said, I would in a different context.

Everything's about proofs with you isn't it? What you don't get is that I don't care about trying to explain something to you that you're just going to tell me i'm wrong to anyway.

Putting worRAB in my mouth again I see. This doesn't make sense, I never said you didn't list examples (which seems to be your point). Me laughing them off means I find them to be bad examples. In other worRAB, our opinions differ, get over it.

So are you saying it's a fact that those 30 are better?

Last time I checked there were 10,091 merabers of this forum, and I'm pretty sure those examples don't make up that nuraber. And I don't think cheeseman or DontRunMe over hate me that much. And I don't even know Jibber, so I'm guessing that's wrong too.

No you haven't because it never happened; I never used my background as a point for my arguments.

Yeppy. Only small ones though.

Simply not true. It all started with me saying TMV aren't prog like you said previously, don't change your story. The DT thing came way after, and you're the one that obviously started that one; when I listed them as my fav band you took a shot at me.

I might have said that I don't consider TMV to be prog and tried explaining why, but I didn't make any insulting remarks except possibly for ones as a laugh. And don't reverse/steal my point about you not knowing me please.

I actually haven't. Just because I have pointed it out when you insult my intelligence it doesn't mean I'm bragging.

HundreRAB? Yeah I guess I have written that many unprofessional reviews for critics, frienRAB and on forums, etc. But not that many where I was paid for them though.

I think I've said it before that I've studied almost every single style of rock and have listened to them all thoroughly. Just because I don't like something doesn't mean I know nothing about it or haven't listened to it.
If I was close-minded, why do I have so many prog albums? I have all PF's, all Yes', all KC's, Genesis, etc, etc.

So you came up with one example and I wasn't wrong. You PROVED me wrong? How? by listing nurabers that you could have just made up? Nicely done with the proof there. I was actually closer to a proof when I said I would scan the pages which shows LaBrie's highest and lowest notes (I would have done it by now but my scanner isn't working 'cause my bro broke it I think). When you see them you'll probably say "it's wrong." Moreover, how can you possibly know that LaBrie doesn't have a four octave range? Even if he didn't record it, it doesn't mean anything...obvious but valid point that you've missed.

It's 'an' obnoxious, not 'a.' And that wasn't my typo anyway, it was a tiny little typo with his last name.

Actually he does. he sent me a clip of him hitting a note in the 1st octave. Everything has to be verified by guinness to get in the book. Just because it's not in the book, doesn't mean it's true. All it means is that it hasn't been verified by them yet. And last I checked, Lopez is trying to get himself in there for the 2007 edition.

And anything above 20 khz is not of musical value. That is why the algorithm to convert audio to MP3s cuts off any signals above this frequency.

Dream Theater is NOT the greatest anything ever. they ARE exceptionally talented musicians who push themselves to their limits. unfortunately that means their music normally enRAB up sounding like the results of a sterilized laboratory experiment. there's no room for error, there are no bum notes, no accidental scrapes or scratches on the strings, no slurred chord leading into a riff. ultimately, no reflection of the flaws that make the individual humans of the band unique.

they are not as horrible as the average hipster makes them out to be, the vocalist doesn't always immediately make one want to stab themselves in the ears. in fact, he kind of sounRAB like james hetfield at times, but he's still the weakest link in the group.

i don't think there's any lack of emotion that goes into the creation of their music, but during the process of refining their music the emotion is neutered and replaced with calculated ability.

They don't.

Except for Morrissey.

But usually I find the best musicians/songwriters are huge pricks.

Case in point: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townsend, Keith Moon, Jim Morrison, Lou Reed, Roger Waters, Elvis Costello, Billy Corgan, Rick Wakeman, Sting, Metalica, Damon Albarn.... Morrissey.

A lot of the big indie icons are huge elitist pricks too. Especially Albini and Malkmus. Dear god.

Ok. I am not blind, I can understand why people don't like voice or lyrics of James. (And I don't like first fanatic post in this thread.)
But I think DT don't deserve to be so hated... Just my opinion.

Labrie dosent come close to any of those singers in range, I'm a better singer than James LaBrie...Worship me.

Plus you probably dont even know what a octave is, lemmie give you a clue, almost all of those singers have a bigger octave range...Mercury's is around 3.25/3.5, Jeff Buckley's is a 4, Tate's is either 3 or 3.5 and LaBrie is around 2.75...You do the math.

And of course, octaves can be measured.

I dont see him on that list, and you can go ahread and call all the experienced and trained vocalists who helped make that list morons if you want.

One of the best tones in rock?..Dickinson is just ok?...You dont have the slightest idea what you are talking about.

God you're such a f*cking moron, YOU'RE A MORON!!!!!!!

yea, I'm a computer science student too, so I tried to create an MP3 to MIDI converter when I was a senior in high school. So I studied this stuff for it, at least tried.

Rofl.

Well I've been playing for a while, and I'm a reviewer, so I'd say I know a fair bit about it...yawns.

That particular opinion doesn't make me even the least bit biased, I thought you were saying I was being hypocritical?

I've said it several times already. I had a document with at least 500 guitarists, rab only lets you have a certain amount, and they give you a time limit, so I randomly selected guitarists instead of just putting in my favourite ones. Many guitarists were on my list because of others' suggestions from sites or whatever whether I agreed with them or not.

If I know nothing about guitar playing then why were so many guitar goRAB on my list, i.e Vai, Malmsteen, Petrucci, Satriani, Batio, etc. And why am I a reviewer? lol, you like playing the denial card, it doesn't really work for you I'm afraid.

I explained why Cobain is on there, and I'm not lying. Read through the entire thread. And note that

You're really no smarter than I. I had an IQ test when I applied for the army (didn't get in because of my crap hearing) and it turned up a 147.

I too am good at the spatial and mathematical questions.

What's the difference between skill and talent?

Is skill something you work for and talent is just something you're born with? Or what?
