Dread going to the gym?

I'm 18, skinny (145 pounds or so) and I really dread going to the gym. I've gone a good number of times, thinking I might get over it, but I haven't. I just feel like I want the gym to be empty. It sucks working out in front of other people, especially since half of them aren't even there to work out, instead focusing on dropping their weights with the biggest bang possible and socializing like it's a bar.

This anxiety wouldn't be a problem, of course, if it didn't conflict with my desire to have a body I'm proud of. I'd just avoid the gym otherwise! I know there are alternatives to working out at the gym but I want to be sure they are effective and not ridiculously expensive.

So should I:

1. Suck it up and work out at the gym for 6 months (argh...)

2. Get some home equipment (up to 60 bucks worth or so, and ONLY if it will give results)

3. Mix of: gym when I have to, some home equipment and calisthenics routines

Either way though, I'm shooting for noticeable muscle mass in a few months.

Thanks!
