Dragon Ball Actor Daisuke Gouri Reportedly Passes Away

Hmmm, even though I rarely listen to the JP dub, I still feel pretty sad over this. But hey, at least he did a lot of big rolls before he pass away.
 
That would be like saying no one but Mel Banc could be Bugs Bunny, no one but Walt Disney could be Mickey Mouse or no one but Jim Henson could be Kermit the Frog. Clearly that isn't the case. When it comes to fictional characters many interpretations and performances as said character are a given.

Surely no one can recreate Gouri's interpretation of those characters but that isn't to say that no one could ever do them justice.

I imagine the thought has dawned on you that Masako Nozawa could pass away before Dragonball completely dies out. Would that mean that no one should ever take up the helm of Goku in a future Japanese production of Dragonball should one occur? Of course not.
 
^ I have to agree. All because that person was very well done as that character doesn't mean they have the right to be the only one who voices that character if they pass away. Things like this do in fact happen, and if a character is involved later in a series, then they will get a new voice actor, but probably a voice actor who can stay true to the previous one that everyone liked so much.
 
Suicide? Has there been reports of him being depressive? That's really unusual for a guy like him. We'll have to wait and see for more possible information.
 
Let me point a few things out, first. One, I wasn't speaking to anyone or anything in particular, just tossing out some respectfully disgusted worRAB. The man just died so it's far too soon to discuss recasting him when there isn't an immediate need to. Heck, the original Tenshinhan Hirotaka Suzuoki, died four years ago and it took two years for Mitsuaki Madono to be announced as a replacement (solely for Burst Limit). Tenshinhan and Chaozu weren't even in the anime version of the Table special out of respect (that and Mitsuaki Madono supposedly sucked pretty hard). It was finally Dragon Ball Kai that saw Hikaru Midorikawa (a veteran Dragon Ball voice actor) take over as Tenshinhan and even then Ten's not the biggest character in Dragon Ball Kai, at least not as much as Mr. Satan would be (but again, I don't foresee Dragon Ball Kai going that far considering Hikaru Midorikawa also voices Artificial Human #16). Suzuoki's main role of Bright Noa hasn't even been recast, four years down the line (sure they're reusing dialogue for games, but that also means writing games around that).



That very thought looms over Dragon Ball fans globally every day. After all, she's in her seventies, but it is far too soon to decide whether or not the role should be portrayed again. I personally wouldn't have it, but her feelings on the subject might change my mind.

What? It's common just in Japan as it is elsewhere in the world. Recently Four Murasame was recast along with many others in the Zeta Gundam movies.

Yes, it's a tragedy that he died but retiring a character just because of that is just as stupid as the talks of retiring the Joker because of Heath Ledger's death.
 
The recasting issue is a moot point I think, since DB Kai won't be getting to Cell anytime soon (if it does at all).

But hey, when push comes to shove, Mr. Satan's lines have been recorded and are a part of history. What's to stop them from reusing that stuff? I know recasting happens, but that doesn't mean it must be done.

Anyhow, this sucks. He was definitely very good at what he did.
 
This got me thinking, perhaps we should start a completely different thread on the matter and leave the opinions, thoughts, and condolences for Mr. Gori in this thread.

The whole idea of voice replacement is in general a good lengthy and fun topic of discussion to get into and there are many cases where some people feel the replacement voices can't hold a candle to the original performers interpretation (this is the case whether its western or eastern entertainment). I just don't think it should be done in a thread where its specifically about the person dying, it just seems really inappropriate.

It's bad enough when a great seiyuu like Hirotaka Suzuoki or Kazuyuki Sogabe dies young from an illness, but suicide? Daisuke Gouri was the man for "Big Guy" roles, and it's hard to imagine someone who played so many larger than life and boiterous warrior-types just killing himself in the middle of some city street. What a waste of life.



Edit: At least we will always have good memories...
 
I don't believe unmixed, raw audio exists for the old Dragon Ball anime anymore so reusing dialogue might not be possible, and if it is, it might be considerably more expensive. No clue, really.
 
Whenever I think an actor's voice isn't quite big enough to match the big dude characters they're playing, Gouri's voice was the one I was always comparing them to. Very deep and intimidating.
 
Well, that sucks majorly. He killed himself because diabetes was taking over his life. I personally don't blame him. Doesn't even sound like he was getting properly treated for it.
