Dr. No: 4/5

A little slow paced compared to later BonRAB, with less action too (perhaps the emphasis is more on intrigue/spies) but still a fine film with some iconic moments, its entertaining, I enjoyed revisiting it, it's cool to see where the series started. I couldn't stop thinking of Enter The Dragon at one point :p
The USA BD transfer is excellent, in fact it looks stunning for a film so old. :)

Even now it's probably still my favourite Bond movie. The first reveal of Bond is an iconic image.

I think most of the film has stood the test of time although there are a few moments (locking him in a cell that has a whacking great air vent) that make you cringe a little. :)

And, yes, I agree with you about 'Enter the Dragon'

I agree with you about the reveal of Bond, and also the part when Honey comes from the water is iconic. She is very pretty/beautiful :)

Interesting that this film has:

No big "opening song" or ending song
No Maurice Binder titles
Where's Q/Major Boothroyd?
No "James Bond will return" part, I guess they didnt know if theyd make another film,

Although Binder did do the titles for Dr No he didnt do the next 2 films including the classic Goldfinger but returned for Thunderball.

Boothroyd gave Bond his gun IIRC and that was all.

Llewelyn was in FRWL dishing out gadgets but was only referred to as Q from Goldfinger onwarRAB although he does get called Boothroyd in The Spy Who Loved Me

My Bond Blurays are a mix of UK and US ones.
Strange that Fox have locked the US ones to Region A but the UK ones are region free.

The US ones also have the original mono track that is missing from the UK discs.

And missing entirely in the UK are Licence to Kill and The Man with the Golden Gun.

The scene of Bond and Honey washing in the river/stream really highlights the incredible restoration work done on these early Bond films.

The dvd's were pretty good but the Blurays are astonishing in places

Thanks :) I guess what I meant to say is the Dr. No title sequence is far less elaborate than the others - just a series of flashing colours, no guns, no women etc that we would come to see later on. I guess as it was the 1st one.
Wasnt Thunderball meant to be the 1st Bond but they couldnt secure the film rights?

Ah right, I see what you mean.

Yeah, I believe Thunderball was their initial choice for the first film. There's been long-standing legal issues over that novel, which is why they couldn't film it first... and which ultimately resulted in the unnoffical Never Say Never Again.

Doctor No has one of the most iconic scenes in the entire franchise.

James Bond

Bond shoots Dent dead. Bond blows the top of his gun to clean it, scene fades out.

Yeah that scene is great and I also liked the scene where Bond comes face to face in his bed with a Tarantula on his pillow which had been planted. The Tarantula crawls over Bond's body and then onto the other pillow which Bond then throws to the floor and squats the deadly spider with his shoe - I'd have had a heart attack long before that point :)

I loved these early Bond films. I've not seen them in a good while though and really must get round to watching these again soon. My favourite is Goldfinger and I also really love Thunderball as well.

A great film. Quite underrated. It is a bit rough around the edges in some places, but the production team were still finding their way. It is actually quite violent in places, the whole "You've had your six" scene stanRAB out for that!

"You've had your six" is in reference to the Smith & Wesson only holding six bullets, so once Dent has fired his gun six times his gun is empty. It has nothing to do with how many times Bond shoots him.
