Dr Dick

I just got into a pointless little spat with a poster on another forum. I don't usually bother to argue the toss with people, but this poster was making ad hominem attacks on me. Anyway, this guy signs off one of his 'thoughts' with the prefix "Dr."

Just as Count Dracula might add the word "Vampire" after his name, I think the Good Doctor was trying to give me a fright by alerting me, should I wish to do combat, to the frightful calibre of my opponent. Oooh. Oxford, you say.

Though the strategy had an effect of sorts, it was certainly not what the Doctor ordered. For while Doctors who declare themselves so in hospitals and surgeries have a good chance of making me feel better, those who bandy their so-called doctorates in common conversation tend to make me sick.

;851112']It's the idea that if you sound smart, you can't be wrong. It's what a lot of people hide behind. Granted, anyone can sound like a genius over the internet. Any facts you have to research are a click away.

I started out agreeing with you but offering the condition of complexity which would soon crumble the facade of feigned intelligence. As I re-read your reply I came to disagree with it though. Don't kill me. How does someone sound smart? Either what they say has merit and the concept they are trying to convey is sound or they're full of shit and regardless of the words they chose, it's obvious.

Sentence structure and adherence to grammatical rules are not necessarily indicators of intelligence. Not to mention the inherent flaws in communicating ones true intentions or ideas coupled with the flaws of written communication in the first place.

I think someone whom, for whatever reason, had decided to pretend to be more knowledgeable than they actually were would soon disclose themselves with inconsistencies in their contributions if not the context itself.

;851195']Sounding smart and being smart are two different things.

For instance,

A smart man has an extensive vocabulary. He also knows that not everyone out there uses the same vocabulary. He's smart enough to communicate clearly, and be simple about it.

An idiot who thinks he's smart will use big words, more effort, and more time to make a simple point.

Simple isn't stupid. It's genius.

And here is a great example of how the absence of tonal inflection in the written word can leave the reader confused. Given the context I am inclined to think that you're post is meant to oppose mine. The content seems to agree with it, hence my uncertainty.

Simple isn't stupid. It's genius. Yes. That is correct. And the earth isn't square. It's round.

What is? I'm at a loss. Most of your previous post made no sense. And your "talk smart" comment brought the conversation back to the beginning. We seem to be agreeing for the most part though I feel like you are attacking me and presuming I am doing the same in return.

I don't attack the things in life I don't understand. I would rather make the effort to understand the differences. I'm sorry if it's 'your way or the highway' I guess I was wrong in my perception of you.

;851286']I wasn't attacking you, wierdo. You'd know it if I was. I was rambling, and then pretty much agreeing with "..." for no reason at all.

But there is no "my way or the highway". You only get a sidewalk option.
