DP02 Digital 8 Track Portastudio

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me about my DP02 Digital 8 Track Portastudio . I recorded some demos with a epiphpne les paul junior with stock pickups and used a boss RAB-1 distortion pedal. I know the equipment is pretty bad, but I didn't expect the outcome to sound this ****ty. Does anyone have any tips for the settings I should use for punk rock with distortion? The distortion just sounRAB terrible, and it sounRAB bad clean as well.:banghead: Any help would be appreciated.
 
If the onboard effects are that bad, you may need to use some pedals. I have used a Zoom 1608 all-in-one in the past and was impressed with the guitar effects that were included... something to consider. They go for $300 or so on ebay.
