Downton Abbey - ITV1

but that was the Old IRA very different from the provisional IRA.

The people involved in freedom for Ireland at the time believed fully in equality between men and women. So as an Irish Rebublican male of his time his interest in freedom for women is historically correct and so completely believable.

Well, sour-faced maybe, but a pretty face though? Plus maybe he's a bit dazzled by her air of superiority.

I don't like Edith much, but Mary is so horrible to her I can kind of understand her wanting to hit back.

I think it is was to make the snobby butler like the injured valet more.
or maybe so the snobby butler will keep quiet if he catches injured valet and head maid together!?!?

(sorry am really bad at remembering names)

I think it was refered to as 'Istanbul' by Turks/Ottomans since it fell to them in the 15th century.

I doubt she had anal-sex, I imagine he was refering to heavy petting? I can't see someone jumping from virgin to agreeing to a bit of sodomy... I initially assumed he'd tried to rape her and she'd done him in, but apparently not. One of Mary's dresses did look suspiciously loose fitting in the 'next week' trailer.

I don't understand why they've not tried to force one of the younger daughters on the cousin? The money would still stay in the family.

We seem to have stopped racing through time though, since "an independent Albania was proclaimed on November 28, 1912".

Adverts are very intrusive especially when they appear every five minutes interspersed with trailers for inferior rubbish, its a very valid complaint when they spoil the flow of a drama, while i had my misconceptions about Downton Abbey i can say it would have been more enjoyable had it not contained the poor abysmal Froggatt actress and the lengthy constant flow of adverts every ten minutes.

I don't watch all of the costume drama thingies - but I have liked some - and at first I thought this was the remake of Upstairs Downstairs! :o but I loved that when it was on, so I will def give this a go - especialy as Liam from Corrie is in it! :o;)
Plus it really does look good too.
Something decent on the box for a change!

One criticism tonight...oh well, two then.

1. Selective deafness - would the cook in a 1912 country house be familiar with this expression? I suspect not.

2. "I trained as nurse during the war". I was going to ask which war, but then dear PW mentioned the war in southern Africa later on. Would she really have trained for that? How old is she supposed to be? The war in Africa was less than 20 years beforehand. Wouldn't she have spent her time bringing up Dan and any siblings at the time? I realise that she's representing the "modern woman" with her ideas about the use of that new fangled adrenaline and whatnot but I doubt that she'd have been in South Africa with a 13 year old to look after and he's definitley a grammar school boy.
