Downton Abbey - ITV1

With the estate entailed, a good and prosperous marriage was essential for Mary (and the other daughters).
Without the attraction of money or land, her virginity was a prize that Mary could not risk.

I can't see a girl in her position permitting any sort of sexual imtimacy
(even tho Famook was hot!)

I don't think there's a problem in pointing out holes in a programme, because that can be a bit fun to do, the problem is that some damn a programme due to minor ones, which can well be seen as petty. I like to spot holes in things, it's just a bit of fun to me, but I tend to forgive programmes where there are minor issues and just allow some suspension of disbelief, etc. Obviously, if the holes, mistakes or wrong mannerisms get a bit too much, then there's something wrong to moan about, but I don't think Downton Abbey has got to that level yet.

Hello Downton Abbey people,

My first post! I thought it appropriate that I lose my Digital virginity at Downton Abbey, just like Lady Mary.

Please be gentle with me, and no strange practices, or I'll have to get the servants to sneak your corpse back to the east wing.

The DVD was already highly placed (prior to airing) in the movers and shakers list at Amazon so I can only imagine those pre-ordering folk anticipated the incessant ad-breaks and opted to wait for the disc. Kinda runs contrary to ITV

Fair enough, but if she had said in the programme "I want to be a typewriter" it would have sounded funny to a modern audience.

You have to allow the writers a bit of licence to allow for the way worRAB change over the years. I think that the word they should have chosen was "stenographer" which was often used back then and is more accurate than secretary. Perhaps they would have needed another line with someone saying "Stenographer? What the bloomin' heck is one of the those?"

No, I think the relationship with Mary is the one being signposted to us. He's attracted to/fascinated by her. She despised him initially but, as she has one disaster after another trying to hook an eligible chap, she will gradually become frienRAB with the sympathetic Matthew and then come round to the idea of hooking up with him.

That's what I THINK will happen. However, personally I don't think Mary is a very nice person and would rather Matthew ended up with Sybil or Edith. But he won't.

This is crude, but i'm just going to ask anyway because I want to know if others thought it was implied too...

Did Mary have anal sex with the Turkish guy? I can't remember exactly what he said, but he said she'd still be a virgin for her husband (so it wasnt traditional sex) and she asked if it was safe.

He obviously died in the act, naked. She dressed when she went to fetch the maid.

ITV biggest problem has always been they cannot make a decent period drama. BBC has always done best !
so we wait and see how good this is , or just a one hit wonder. have a feeling i rather watch jeremy kayle show !

The Grand was on ITV4 [may be 3] recently and has been periodically for the past couple of years so it will probably be repeated again soon. All the episodes. Amanda Mealing was in the first season but replaced in the second. She was similar in attitude to Holby's Connie back then!

That is a well-known, although I don't know how true, "urban myth" of the time - although, even today u get black fingers from reading a newspaper. However I don't think newsprint would have stayed wet so long that it needed ironing to be dry...

Thank you! I mentioned to Mr BB that he looked like a cricketer from yonks ago, and he tried to convince it was Fred Trueman. Then I wondered if I was thinking of Fred Titmuss.

Thanks for putting me out of my misery.
