Downton Abbey - ITV1

I think a lot of people are comparing it to the original earlier episodes of Up/Down which were of course early Edwardian...I remember Lady Bellamy being on the Titanic.

Aw, Sybil is just the lovely baby of the family - sweet and kind and perfect, the youngest and best of the 3 sisters.

Just like all youngest of 3 sisters ... I'm the youngest of 3 sisters ... ;)

That's a very blinkered attitude, if I may say so. Most TV channels have their quota of rubbish, perhaps ITV more than others - I don't know.
I choose my TV watching by possible interest in what is listed and NOT by what channel it may happen to be on.

I gave up on Corrie over 18 months ago and have also stopped watching the likes of BGT and X-Factor and may well decide not to watch Strictly Come Dancing anymore. Most of this type of show go on for far too long and many long running shows should be axed IMHO.

I was forced to sit through this by my wife but I must admit I'm loving it. "Don't go in the car everyone seems to have one. There were 5 cars parked at the market last week and I saw another 3 on the way there." Or something along those lines. ;)

That is brilliant news. It's a huge topic of conversation at my work, and I know it'll please the others I work with. Can't wait to get back now after my lunch break and tell them!! Yay!!

I do not think Downton would be as interesting if set in a country home in 2010 - so I assume that is the reason that they set it in 1912. They did not set out to create an historical re-enactment but a drama.

As for getting the period "right" no contemporary drama gets even its own period "right" in the sense of being accurate in all details. No school operates anything like the one in Waterloo Road - but it would be silly for teachers and pupils post on threaRAB pointing this out. Why do people expect historical dramas to be accurate in every detail, but accept police dramas with no resemblance to real police procedure and hospitals that have no similarity to any that has ever existed?

My maternal grandmother , one of several children of a poor Welsh farmer, went to be a sewing maid in a very wealthy Jewish household just before WW1 .The son of the house fell in love with her and when he refused to give her up he was banished from the house with her and cut off from them for ever. He never had any contact with any of his family again. He and my grandmother were happily married for nearly 50 years until he died though they had a big struggle financially at first.
They both died when I was quite young and not really interested in all this history stuff but I wish now I had asked them more about their lives .
I loved this first episode and will be glued to the tv when its on !

I recorded it too and started watching it half way through the recording so i had ample zap to whizz through the aRAB.

I loved this show. It was gentle, the costumes were wonderful and the unlying current of ambition was fan-bloody-tastic.

At last, a reason to stay home and watch the TV on a sunday evening.
