Downton Abbey - ITV1

Particularly as he obviously came out of the army and needed a live-in position, so he had no accommodation of his own it would seem?

What did happen at the end of their working life to people like cooks, butlers and head housekeepers who didn't marry and have a home of their own?

I think they really needed to bring home the importance of the estate being entailed. Because things are so different today, a lot of people may not know that an heiress who married lost all entitlement to her family's fortune and her inheritance became the property of her husband after marriage. Therefore not only was the Estate at risk, but the entire and future family fortune and that meant there wouldn't be anything for their daughters.

Having three effectively impoverished daughters to marry off was bound to be an almost impossible task no?

Wikipedia gives a really well known example

I missed the relationship between Bates and Grantham. How do they know one another and why does Grantham have such a guilt trip towarRAB him?

You should be set to 'auto', in the settings menu, then ITV send the signal to switch on and off.

If your padding is set manually, it overrides the broadcaster.

I guess we'll have to agree to differ. I can't fault the acting, even Dame Maggie's panto dame stuff seems "right" for the show but the arc of the drama seems rather hackeneyed to me. Which of us can't see that Matthew and Lady Mary will end up together after having almost hated one another on first sight. It's high class soap - more Persil than own brand - but soap nevertheless.

Brilliant news from the Ratings Thread, over 8 million for DA last night, a million more than the first episode when you normally expect even the best performing dramas to drop a little from the first showing.
