Downton Abbey - ITV1

Are you really saying that there are serious TV addicts today that don't have some means of recording TV programmes - especially those that post here.
I would think it highly unlikely.

Or they could've just been engaging in heavy petting and oral. Anyway, I thought it was a bit daft tonight and it seems to be getting worse instead of better.

Have you ever watched Upstairs Downstairs? The butler in that is a right snob, far more stuck up than the family he works for. So it's not surprising that some of the servants in this are the same.

Regarding next week's ep about Mary's "reputation" being talked about in London, there was a quick conversation between O'Brien and Thomas which referred to what they were going to do about the other matter and they said something like letting it lie for the minute or some such worRAB. It was all done in the hustle and bustle of the kitchen so I can't remember the exact wording. I took this to mean the Mary situation. A lot of gossip went on between the servants of other houses in those days so it is quite plausible that this could happen.

I also have a habit of watching for period errors. Sorry! It seems a little far fetched that the servants have a very good life. Most only had a half or full day off a month so the way they are sent to bed with a cold, the servants bedrooms being quite big and well furnished, a bed each, going out to the fair, borrowing library books etc. doesn't sit quite right with me.

Having said that I am still really enjoying this series. Just right for a Sunday evening.

If he didn't have someone to help him out, it would have been the workhouse. People think of that as a Victorian thing, but it wasn't abolished until about 1927.
