Downton Abbey - ITV1

I'm really looking forward to it, it's got a great cast so I'm hoping for good things!

You know that Sir Ben Kingsley started out in Coronation Street? Played Ron Jenkins from 1966-1967.

Just because they started in a soap doesn't make them a bad actor and watching last night I didn't notice any difference in 'quality' of acting between Rob whatshisname and the other actress and any of the other actors.

Not long to wait now for the start of this drama. :D

And another FM here who loves Maggie Smith!

I have managed to avoid all the trailers up to now, so don't feel 'spoiled' in any way.

I can't watch a TV programme and post so I'll catch up with the chat later.

Hope you all enjoy the first episode. :D

The world in Downtown Abbey is so attractive to us because it seems so gentle and genteel in contrast to both our own real world, and most TV drama and reality TV.

Is it not enough to just say we find it grating? Which we have done. Plus I don't rate her as an actress either, so it's probably a combination of the two.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that! Never been keen on Elizabeth McGovern since she played Percy Blakeney's wife in The Scarlet Pimpernel with Richard E Grant, she was totally wrong for that part too. I almost didn't watch Downton cos she was in it, but I didn't want to miss the lovely Brendan Coyle and Hugh Bonneville :o I'm really glad it's getting a second series.

I thought Froggart played her role fine. Her role in the first episode was fairly small, so how you can slate her on that is beyond me. Obviously people like her and her talent,

One of the reasons that the ONS is not including a question in the census about sexuality is because they don't believe that they will get an honest enough answer. This is the first time that this question has been asked in any national survey and the expectation (and previous experience of questions such as these) is that over time the numbers will increase.

There are some statistical anomalies in the figures themselves, the vast majority of gay people are in the under 45 category whereas only 50% of straight people are, suggests that the older people are the more likely they are to be reserved about their sexuality.

Anyway, at the end of the day does it really matter? 1 in a hundred or 50% of the population, gay people still exist and are still a part of society and contribute to the production of television programs whether it is by paying the licence fee or buying the products advertised.
