Downton Abbey - ITV1

The duke was a gold-digger . Creepy Thomas had tipped him off when the cousins died, thinking that Mary would inherit and therefore be a very rich heiress. When he found out that Mary wouldn't inherit he changed his mind about trying to marry her. He knew Thomas because they had had a fling and the reason he was snooping round the servants' quarters was to get the love letters he had sent to Thomas. He threw them into the fire therefore removing any chance Thomas might have of blackmailing him.

Thank you David, and Jequila, for the welcome. I've been lurking for a while on this entertaining thread and thought it time to perform with you young Turks!

The Irish Home Rule Bill was put before parliament at almost exactly the same time as the Titanic went down in April 1912. Before this time all efforts had been rejected by the Tory-dominated House of LorRAB who had a veto on all legislation until just before this time. The Bill (not dissimilar to the devolution bills passed in Scotland and Wales in the 1990's) was passed in 1914, when of course it was swept up by the War, and the later events in Ireland.

So, JF might have a sub-plot about the rise of Irish Socialism and Trade Unionism - a small but significant part of the wider Republican movement - but I'd be amazed (but mightily impressed) if it was historically credible.

If you watch / record it from ITV the following day on their iplayer there are no adverts, no DOGs (digital on screen graphics) or voice overs to ruin the credits.

There are the advert bumpers (end of part one) etc a moments pause then into Part 2. I have taken to recording may ITV programmes that way.[/I]

Alas, I disagree. I got the impression that his thing with the Duke was a one-off to try and uh... strengthen his grip on the greasy pole. I doubt we'll see anything else of that sort in the rest of the series.
