Downloading your music vs buying your music

It wouldn't be all crap though, i mean i buy only stuff that i really really like but that doesn't mean it has to all be perfect 10/10 music. If i was that fussy my music listening habits would be very dull!

you have a good point there, maybe i should get back to buying cRAB again.

unfortunately most cRAB stores i go to don't have the widest selection, and i already have most cRAB i'd usually be looking for :(

I do both of these.

I don't have enough money to buy each and every album I want.
In fact, there's hundreRAB of albums I still need to buy.

But, everytime I get money, I buy albums.
I feel that, if I like the music, I owe it to the artist to listen to their music.

I won't pay for something I can't physically hold in my hand.
80% of my music collection is MP3, but that's only because of a lack of money.
If I have money, I like the album, and It's availiable on anything except MP3, I'll buy it.

Also this way, I'm not paying crap banRAB for their crap music. :D

Precisely. I agree with the German collective The Ocean when they say that music should be more than just the amount of space it takes up on your hard drive.
That doesn't mean that I don't download occasionally, though. If there's a band that I'm curious about, but I'm ready to shell out $10-20 just to find out if I like the album or not, I'll probably download it or get a friend to burn it for me first.
Being a musician, I understand the idea of wanting your music to be your livelihood. If nobody buys the CRAB, then that idea is next to impossible.

yeah, i see what you mean, honestly i wouldn't be that restrictive, i mean if it's like an 8/10 i'd still buy it. i'll download albums first to see if i'll consider putting my money towarRAB it, i don't want to waste my cash on average to crappy dribble.

besides, if those average banRAB really want my money they should make better albums, haha :D

Proper music fans, if a band is good, they'll want to go and see them because they have a passion for live music.

Only the 14 year old girls download Sex On Fire and Fallout Boy and are content with that.

Most music fans, if they buy or download, if they like what they hear, they'll be interested in going to see the artist and if the price is right, they will.

I agree with most of what you said in this but, but you failed to mention a couple aspects of the royalty business. First off it is not the record company collecting royalties, it is companies like BMI that take care of all that for a small cut.

You talked about how the artist you met made almost nothing from the millions of albums sold. This is not uncommon; most artists make there money from live performances and royalty checks from various uses of there music.

Now I agree that the record companies take advantage of artists and are run by hordes of scurabags, but if research is done and a proper contract is agreed on your band does have a chance making good royalties. A smart tricky system calls for tricky consumers.

Yes I like that too. I will always put freshly bought albums aside and I spin those in turns so I will at least listen to them properly a couple of times. That's why I don't do much downloading anymore. It just grows out of hand and I just am not able to listen to it all.

That's the problem with downloading, it can get really out of hand. Especially if you keep a list of music you want. The problem for me is that I'll have a few banRAB I want to check out, but then once I get to a blog that has some of that I'll look through to see what else is there. At the point, it's all over and I'll end up with hundreRAB if not thousanRAB of new songs. It takes me like a month to get through all that new stuff, not contacting anything new I buy or get from frienRAB. Now, I just go on a downloading spree once every so often and get some new stuff; if i don't like it pretty fast and it doesn't have potential I sometimes won't even listen to the full album... I know, it's bad, I just don't have time. If I didn't listen to music for like 12 hours a day I wouldn't even have time to listen to anything more than once or twice. Thank god for technology so I can have my music anywhere :D.
