Im a scottish married to an asian man & we joke around all the time & he personally doesnt take offence at jokes about other cultures. We can also laugh at jokes made about Glasgow Rangers FC & Celtic FC. Doesnt matter at what teams expense. People take things way too seriously.
Obviously there is a line, i dont find any of the supposed funny texts about Jade Goody funny at all.

...and only blacks are allowed to make fun of their own and call them N*****!

The problem with English people joking about a large amount of other cultures is that we have violently suppressed them in the recent past. This results in the jokes bringing back those memories for many people.

As for the Irish, i would still take care if i were to tell a joke about them. Again this is due to recent violence.

This is just my opinion and you may disagree

and it is true like you and your husband may share a joke and thats great. but one cant assume that the same will hold true for every person of an ethnic minority

Pathetic! No one even complained about it??? It makes my blood boil when I read things like this and all the stupid political correctness that goes on in this country. There used to be a programme on tv when I was a child called 'Love Thy Neighbour' which was about a black couple and a white couple arguing, calling each other racist names etc which was really funny - God forbid they should put that on today! It is crazy, like you say, we have all learned to live with each other and without the interference of political correctness I think things would go along much smoother.

:)

when people make jokes like that they don't think of the feelings they may hurt and before they know it everyone is making fun of that race or culture so next time someone says something mean about your race ignore them because they will get theres

All funny jokes of this sort are politically incorrect. But people get a little touchy about jokes that reinforce lines of political subjugation or repression. In America, for instance, black comics can make jokes about so-called "black culture" and white people in general. White comics have to be a little more careful when doing the same thing because power is still distributed unequally along ethnic and cultural lines. I would say that jokes get into problem areas when the context and circumstances reinforce a hegemony.

Exactly as do my husband and myself.
Don't sweat it, the humorless are miserable, bores who never get invited to any fun parties or get laid by anyone attractive. Let them have their bitterness and petty dramas.

I tend to agree with you, there's a lot of humour being suppressed in case someone takes a racist offence...!

because white people can only joke about other white people.
its the pathetic double standard society that we live in
