don't want the data plan

I work at two universitys with wi fi, I don't want the data plan. verizon said that as of nov 2008 you have to have the plan. is there anyway or other phone that I can use just Wi Fi and a pda.

Yeh, this is Verizon trying to make money off of their data network. Unfortunately they do not offer any phones that have wifi that are not considered a 'smart phone'. Therefore, any phone that has wifi you also have to have a data plan. Lame, I know.

Actually, the only other solution is to get a blackberry - but then you have to have a blackberry plan.
 
Actually there are 3 smartphones left on Verizon that you can get without data plans. Moto Q, VX6800(?) and one more older Verizon SMT-something. You can get these and put a data block on them but apparently those are it and you'd better move fast on those because the prices are now at the End of Life price
 
Yeh, the bb plans are about the same price as the data plans - imo the bb's are worth it if you're going to spend the money though just cause they're so much easier to use.

dingster - I didn't think you could still get those phones from verizon since they were old - I mean, I'm sure you can find them ebay or other phone-only retailer.
 
best thing to do would be to get like an ipod touch or something for wi-fi web browsing. i dont think we'll ever see a day where verizon doesn't cripple their phones.
 
I bought a used Audiovox VX6700 because it has wifi access without the data plan. It's a great phone but getting long in the tooth so I too would like to get something new that I can have without a data plan. I guess wifi and no data plan is too much to ask for, eh?
