"Don't talk about religion and politics?"?

I'm sure there's a lot of truth to this adage, which is why I do my best to live by it and not talk about religion or politics with friends, people I meet, etc. But is it unusual that they're the things I find the most interesting to talk about? I could talk for hours about either, especially politics. I find talking about most other things pretty tedious and difficult. Is the reason why they're considered taboo subjects in polite conversation that people generally are *too* interested in them and won't be able to hold back their deeply-held passionate views about them if you open up the subject/s, or is it that people don't *like* to talk about them?

Another thing: when I was a believing Christian (I've now lost my faith), my pastor said something to me that really confused & disturbed me. He told me I had been wrong to go around sharing my faith because, he said, "unsaved people cannot stand to talk about God." Does anyone (believers or non-believers alike) think there's any validity to that statement? I find it confusing, because even now as an infidel, I find the subject of God/religion fascinating and have no problem talking about it. And if "unsaved" (ie. non-Christian) people couldn't stand to talk about God, what's with all the other religions that mention God?
