oh and just to clear the air before anyone tells me i'm an idiot because i'm not in the military...

if i were physically capable of being in the military, i would be in the military. however i have nerve damage from birth that excludes me from military service because I am incapable of performing the required duties (I have almost no use of my right arm).

Even at the height of the draft years I would've been excluded from service, even if my draft number came up.

gay or straight isn't as relevant as someone you know well enough and have enough comradeship with to look to at a split second reaction. if you can think fast enough about who is the best shot and how they will perform under pressure, more power to you
 
So with the end of "Don't ask, don't tell", that means it goes back to the old way and they CAN ask you if you are gay and if you TELL them they will boot you out and it you REFUSE to tell them they will boot you out, and if you TELL them you aren't but later catch you, they'll throw you in prison?

Sounds like a step backwards for "gay rights".

Yes. Since you don't know me, I can respect your bias, but do me a favor and don't presume I avoid people based on their sexual orientation or refuse to be friends.


Again, why bigotry and ignorance? We're talking about personal preferences. If you're going to go down this road then you may as well talk about sexual orientation in the same way. Why is it only a REACTION to a sexual orientation that is bigoted or ignorant?

ANYONE that would put "getting your face blown off by an IED" in the same category of discomfort as "serving in a military that also allows gays to serve openly" probably isn't mature enough to handle the rigors of military life anyway, imo.
 
No. The proposed bill would make it so that there is no law against gays serving in the military. So... don't ask don't tell would no longer be an issue.

Allowing your personal tastes and prejudices to leak into policy making in such a way as to reduce the individual rights and liberties of others does indeed imply a certain level of ignorance, yes.
 
didn't mean to give that impression, I was being sarcastic. I don't know who is the best shot out of all the people I know- I know who the best shot is out of maybe 4 people I've been shooting with
