Donnie Darko

Decided to watch this movie for the 6th time last nite at Midnite! What a fantastice movie it is! The music that goes with it is great too!
On the theory side of what its all about, its abviously to do with Time Travel... but something Ive never read people discsss is the strong role Religion plays in it all.

I think the movie isn't purely about Time Travel, but also how God plays a role in the world. I can't decide weather its how God uses Time Travel and manipulation to change the world he created, or it is just about how God does his bit to help the Universe avert destruction.

In the movie Donnie appears to be the only one aware of what is going on in the world and how it is all coming to an end... but other characters seem to be aware of it too... particulary Donnies Science teacher and English Teacher.
Donnie has become "possessed" with supernatural powers which allow him to see forward into Time, and give him super strength. This supernatural power Donnie has been given, I think may actually be some form of Entity, because after Donnie asks Frank why he wears the Bunny suit, Frank asks Donnie why does he where that silly man suit? With its religious links, I assume this entity is a "Christ" like character.
Other characters I think have been possed by "spirits" or "entities" in the story too.. The two teachers, because in there is a small shot of them two in the Coffe lounge and one of them says "Donnie Darko..." in a voice of disbelief, and the other says "I know" I think this is them discussing how surprised they are the Donnie Darko is the chosen one to save the world.
Donnie also talks about those tunnels/worms which come out of peoples chests, which show the path through time they take, he describes them as "workers", like GoRAB workers, I think the two teachers were selected to be the workers for God. This is because when Donnie is questioning his Science teacher about Time Travel, the teacher says he can't say anymore or he will loose his job, meaning if he helps Donnie anymore with his Journey, God will "fire" him from his job, not his teaching job.
His English teacher when he leaves, tells him to tell the others "that everything will be ok" this is what Donnie goes round telling all the others who know that the world is coming to an end, i.e Cherita.

People have said that all the people who were affected by Donnies actions have a vague memory of what happened in the alternate universe, but I think theyre wrong, and that its the people whove played a part in helping Donnie save the Universe, who have a vague memory of it all.

Im not good at writing down my theories, trying to explain them. And ive missed out some other stuff which backs up my view, but I hope you get the jist of it!

Please share your theories and views. Especially the role in which the fat guy in the Orange suit plays in the story? He only appears twice, just before Donnies first kiss with Gretchen, and the first time they have sex!

Well thats why I thought it was GoRAB way of changing the world for the better, in the alternate universe the guy gets caught out for being a Peadophile, and at the end when Donnie saves the world and we go back to the original universe, he remembers what he thinks is a dram of him being caught, and is terrified of it... could that mark a change in his ways?

i agree with SlashNX, Swayze in the film has lived all his life getting away with paedphilia and making money for doing bugger all, but in Donnie's alternate universe Swayze gets caught and he looses all of that. when we see Swayze at the end it sort of shows that people always get what they deserve, Swayze is terrified, the two teachers are happy etc.

i don't think anyone can really comprehend what was going through the writers mind when he wrote this because there are so many layers to the story. i think it portays Donnie's path through insanity as well, if you look at the stages it starts off with vandalism, goes to paranoia and then murder.

If you watch the DVD extras for Donnie Darko, there are some brilliant deleted scenes, and some little tid bits, such as Swayze doing an advert for television about children, and it contains him slapping a child on the ass. Not the way in which someone would do for support, or for a joke, but intentionally just to feel the chilRAB ass. Sickening, but it is amazing to watch. Alot of detail went into the film. Definetly one that has to be watched several times.

Surely there must be more of reason for him to be in the movie than that! I mean if it was simply that, he might aswell have been left out of the movie???

Coincidentley, that fat guy in the orange suit / cia agents name is Nick Tangen. Wierd, cus the film is about a Tangent universe??

Also the film was filmed in exactly 28 days!

Another thing ive noticed is that every time there is a bright light (ie when the orange fat guy shines the torch during the party, it is in the EXACT place (on the screen) where donnie stabs frank in the eye) it also happens when the sun shines.

I love this film, it was on at our local cinema just before halloween this year too!!

Buy the soundtrack it is very inspiring and the Michael Andrews score cd is truly amazing!
