And Donnies death wasn't pointless, in order to restore the order he had to die, he was destined to die in his reality, but was saved by Frank, so therefore making him the chosen one, (or he may have been the chosen one before that) allowing him to save the world. If he didnt die, reality would have been altered again, and the world destroyed.
