Donnie Darko

'It's more than just the 'time travel' similarlity - I could write several thousand worRAB on the topic, but that'd be wasting everyone's time Let's just put it this way - at no point in Donnie Darko were there hard-light holograms, androiRAB or killer robots - unless that's all been saved for the Director's Cut '

Yeah an DD has a bunny called Frank ;)

What I don't get though is many people who seem to think it's someting it's not. All Donnie Darko was to me was

depressed boy thinks world is going to end, rabbit tells him what to do, kills him self thinking he is saving others, which he isn't
point of story : no matter what fate controls you.

But even in 96/97 it was a time-travel movie dealing with the massive effects that a small change in the past could have.

Unless you're saying that it was originally a movie about an octogenarian butterfly collector that was changed to a young time traveller after DD became succesfull? ;)

For those yet to see this film, or yet to work out the plot, don't read any further...

Below is a summary of what is going on...

....

"A jet engine from the future crashes into Donnie's house and triggers a parallel world, which will end in 28 days.

Frank is sent to warn Donnie of the end of the world, and help guide him into a position where he will send the engine back through time, closing the parallel time frame, and saving the world. Frank is basically a premonition from the future, as Donnie kills Frank at the end of the film.

Donnie is manipulated into situations which will eventually leave him no choice but to send the engine back through time. He meets Gretchen, which proves to him that he doesn't have to die alone (one of his fears), and makes him less scared of death.

He burns down Cunnighams house, which leaRAB events to making his mother go on the trip with his sister, thereby setting up the plane in the correct position to deposit its engine into the black hole. His shrink also admits that Donnies medication are placebos, indicating he's not as mad as he thinks (this is on the DVD as a deleted scene). As the climax begins to unfold, Donnie unwittingly gets Gretchen killed, and realises that his mother and family will also die if he doesn't close up the black hole.

In closing the black hole, Donnie sacrifices himself, saves Gretchen from being killed, and because he doesn't burn down Cunninghams house, saves his mother from being on the plane (as the other mother could take the kiRAB on the trip instead). He also doesn't kill Frank. In closing the black hole, everybody then wakes up on what would be back on the 1st of October (the start of the movie) and to the news that Donnie has died from a jet engine landing on him."

:D I'll assume for the moment that you mean that in a literal sense (It could be taken in one of several ways else).

Post-modernism is usually used in the context of art or literature, although it can be applied to many things. In it's most simplistic form, it's the concept of reintroducing classic elements into a modernist environment.
Therefore, post-modern jokes usually consist of progressive and forward thinking ideals, but at the same time resort to classic humour.
Examples of this can be found in loaRAB of shows like scrubs, the simpsons and frienRAB. For instance, you may have a fresh faced show with a twisting narrative that breaks the rules of time and space, but at the same time have a knock knock joke and a guy sliping on a banana skin :) OK - crude example, but you get the idea...(I hope)...

It could be said that your reply of "What are post-modern jokes??" is a post-modern joke in itself; a kind of 'straight-guy, dumbfoundedness' in the new technologically-savvy world of the internet.

Even BTTF is better than the Butterfly Effect.

It's not Sparrow, I got to the part where I'm supposed to read her book for more clues, but at this point I'm lost. I'm guessing the lvl 1 is in the book somewhere, because when you enter the password Frank gave you it says you need to go further. Please tell me the lvl 1 password, I've got the lvl 2 one.

I do agree that it's a great movie! I just saw it for the first time yesterday, and I've watched it 3 times since then because it's that good. You know that feeling in your stomach when you're sorta overcome by emotion, but you can't figure out what emotion you are feeling? That's how I felt the first time I watched it and every time since.

Like another poster, I had no expectations either, a friend told me we should rent it so we did. Best 5 dollars I've ever spent at Blockbuster honestly. I'd say the movie was sort of like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas from a "visual" stnadpoint but the story is nothing short of genious.

lol sorry i didn't mean to be, I was only joking, but you did say "song soundtrack" which was xmas No.1! I was very disapointed though when looking at the Donnie Darko's soundtrack album! it had non of the great 80's tunes on it, that made Donnie Darko soo great!

No, but what I am saying is that the film has fairly dramatically changed since way back then.
Also interesting to note is that it took over four years before anyone picked up the screenplay - strangely enough, not so long after DD started to become an 'indie' favourite ;)

Its a great movie I must say :D - I knew knothing about it at all when I watched it, and really loved it, was left a bit confused after watching the first time, but after paying more attention on the second time of viewing I think I understand most of it.

The site is also very freaky. the password for level 1 is 'breathe'
I am about to spend as long as it takes to go through the site. Let y'all know after how i get on :D

Hmm...some of the films listed there also fall into the category of "Something [designed to be] a little strange and weird to draw in the 18 - 30 "alt" market.". Got to say that I liked all of your list above as well as Donnie Darko - some good choices. :)
I didn't have any problems understanding the film after one watching so does that make me a genius or just a smartarse :D ;)
