Hi
Just finished watching this film for the first time, and was wondering if someone out there could explain the ending for me.How did Donnie figure out he head to die to save everyone....I didn't really uderstand any of the ending so if someone could help that'd be great :-)

Ta :-)

I'd agree with videopirate about that. I purchased the director's cut some time ago, but it wasn't anything to exciting. Also, i found a lot of the more minor tweaks to the movie quite annoying.

For example, certain soundtrack alterations confused me a little, and i much preferred the theatrical version's song choices.

As for the visual "chapter" introductions in the DC, hmmm, not so sure about those. I don't think they should've really been placed there. It's almost as though a visual aid is put forth to you suggesting some sort of ongoing explanation but it only really serves to complicate things.

Overall, I think the theatrical version is a better movie. It's shorter, snappier and has a far better flow to it. Also, it's relatively linear enough so that the audience can digest it how they want, wheras with the director's cut, it sort of seems as though the audience is having one major explanation hinted at throughout the movie and there's not much room for individual interpretation of the film....if that makes sense, lol.

What I mean is, when the original theatrical version came out, pretty much everybody who went to see the movie who loved it, had their own opinions on the movie and their own ideas about what it all meant. With the Director's Cut, it often acts to assure the audience that there's only one true message behind the film, and it almost loses a bit of it's magic.

Yeah, the director's cut is more for people who want to know the 'real' explanation of what's going on. It uses passages of the time travel book, which is the key to everything. But it feels like the details are being dictated to you. Like many things, once you know what's going on for real it becomes less interesting.

I watched it again for about the tenth time last week and i love the film but I think that thats what Frank the bunny was all about - he time travelled and warned him.

Donnie Darko is my favourite film of all time. No matter how old it is, or how many times ive seen it, it still blows me away every time. It is classic. Should have been oscar-worthy IMO.

I predict a crappy remake in about 10 years time

Thanx for the advice guys, read the links u recommended and kind of understand it now. I think I would have enjoyed the movie more if I had actually been able to understand what was going on instead of having to come on here and ask u lovely people. But overall not a bad film just a bit complicated hehe

I don't think you necessarily have to know what's going on in the movie to enjoy it a LOT. The first time I watched it I was confused but I also knew I'd just seen a great film.
