'Donnie Darko' sequel in the works

I was just going to make a thread on this. Worst idea ever. Donnie Darko was a classic, why make a sequel to it? Shameless cash in imo.

I agree, it was a one-off film
The trouble with sequels is that if they flop, they drag down the original in people's minRAB as they lump them together.

Donnie Darko, best film ever made. Of COURSE I will watch it. I will reserve judgment until that day. I would have preferd Ellis to be envloved though. You never know, it could be good.

I tend to lump them together when the original personnel are involved and the end product cheapens the original (The Matrix sequels and Star Wars pre-sequels for example). I lump them together and cannot resist thinking about disappointing follow-ups when thinking of the originals.

But it's less sowhen it's been made by a bunch of hacks cashing in on the original. American Psycho isn't harmed by American Psycho 2, for example.

It's pointless if they aren't employing the vision of the original director.
They may as well make it as a separate film which has nothing to do with Donnie Darko.
SounRAB like a cash-in, pure and simple.

Yet another example of the lost creativity and greed of our frienRAB in Hollywood.

Donnie Darko should be left as it is.

I wonder if they're going to be using the same crew as previously? The style of Donnie Darko was pretty perfect for the film. I see a sequal being glamorised to make more money. The whole point in Donnie Darko is that the audience didn't really know what was going on, so were left to their own devices (unless you had the DVD and read the Philosophy of Time Travel :p).

Even if this film is absolutely great, it's still shocking that they made it.

Whats worse is that Richard Kelly who wrote Donnie Darko isn't even involved, its as bad as someone who isnt JK Rowling writing a new Harry Potter or a fourth Godfather without the involvement of FF Coppola, its borderline intellectual property theft.

Yeah it's pretty ridiculous really, especially without the original director/writer involved.

The original has gathered that 'cult' status over time rather than being a superb piece of cinema, presumably down to the constant discussions about what it's all about. Not exactly a banker for a follow up.

The problem is that it's going to be promoted like all other Hollywood films are, so people will go see it, even if they haven't watched the original.

I bet the trailer has a crash, an explosion or some attractive girl in it.

My immediate reaction was WTF?! and nooo.

But if they do it a certain way, it may be interesting.

For example, why Donnie had to sacrifice himself to save the schoolgirls, including his sister. Is there a reason why she in particular should have been saved?

It might undermine Donnie's heroic act, or underline it. I don't know. It might be decent. I like a film called Cube, and while Cube 2 isn't very good, Cube 3 is and that had no involvement from the original director.

Oh I'm not sure about this at all :( Sequels often dilute the power of the first film IMO, does DD actually need a sequel? I think not. The Matrix was completely ruined by the two dismal follw ups and the thing is, as with Alien (admittedly some good sequels) you finish up with a franchise, and that I find quite repellent. Oh dear, Donnie Darko was a wonderful, wonderful film, it should be left alone IMO.
