Donnie didnt create the tangent universe, it was already created. The tangent universe and his universe collide and merge creating a new universe involiving them both, the engine joins the two universes together. Its Donnies job to get the enginse back to the tangent universe so that the two universes can split again and not destroy each other in this third universe that was created by them two merging.

I just watched the directors cut. I'm a little more accepting of the changes than I was first time round. My main quarms are with the ending. Before it was PERFECT. I hate the grid/fireworks effect and the dreams but before the mad world seuqence. Totally unnecessary!
