a few months ago (about october) i fostered a dog for about a month. this dog had major separation anxiety to the point if i sat down & he couldn't see me he would go insane. jack was perfectly fine before this but is now whining at night. i don't think it is separation anxiety as he was in my room last night and was still whining and he doesn't do this when we leave during the day. right now he is 6 years old and we have had him for a little more than 2 years. at night he is also going into the hall and chewing on the carpet in there. i don't know what to do about it b/c it is causing a lot of tension.

right now i am not able to walk him because the bitter cold causes my medical condition to get worse. he doesn't play with other dogs, toys, or people so i can't really exercise him that way. i ordered a treadmill yesterday so i am just waiting for it to arrive, hopefully in the next week or so, so that he can get exercise on this. i know that he isn't whining b/c of having to potty b/c he is on a schedule where water stops at 7, he goes out the last time at 11, and is let out again at 6 when we get up. also, i have looked him over and i can't find any sore spots that could be causing him to be uncomfortable.

he is crate trained but he is now whining at night in his crate if he is in there. he is perfectly fine in there any other time so it isn't the fact that he is in the crate, and it isn't that he is properly trained to that.

the only other thing would be that he was put on purina one after we could no longer find our usual food (the other was higher quality). he was changed on that around the same time as this foster coming and his coat has gotten dull, shedding a lot, and more anxious. we are on our 3rd day of new food (we are changing him slowly to 4health, which is a much better food). i don't know if the food is part of it but the store selling this food says that if it doesn't help him we can have a full refund.

can you think of anything else to do to get rid of the whining?
this dog has 2 other dogs that are with it at night. it is not alone and it was whining last night even though it was in my room.
please actually read what i have written. he is doing it even if he isn't alone!!!

Don't fuss him too much. Give him all the love and attention that you can possibly give, but when you leave him, whether you're going out or going to bed, just take him out in the yard to let him go to the toilet, then say "goodnight/see you later, into bed, good boy", give him a small biscuit and shut the door. then leave as quickly as possible, so he knows you're out.

When you come back, don't be all "Ooooooooh helllooooo!! *fuss fuss fuss*" because this makes them think that being alone was bad. Simply say hello, give him a stroke, take him out to the toilet and then after a while, you can fuss him. This shows him that being alone isn't bad.

This is what we do with our dog and she never seems to make a fuss at night. I hope this helps :)
