I have an 8 year old Dachshund that was from a puppy mill, when she was a pup she wasn't socialized but one time with another dog and that ended very badly. I got her when I was 10 so I didn't know much about training then. When I was 12 I really started working with her. Boo was very dog aggressive but with a lot of time and effort she is almost 100%. Boo has terrible genetics and is a weak nerved dog but has been coming along well. She had been doing well, we can walk by a dog and there will be no response or hardly one at all. With the dogs that she knows she is fine with. My yard sadly is the one that connects one part of our subdivision to the other and so everyone and their dogs always walk right through our yard. Well some people I know were coming through with some other people I don't know and one had a 10 week old puppy with them off leash. My dog was on a leash. Boo went ballistic. I had a half check on her and usually all I need is a flat collar or a half check but we had been working on obedience in our yard when this happened. She immediately went after the puppy and the puppy ran for her life. Boo completely ignored any corrections from the half check. I thought about a prong but like I said this hasn't happened in a very long time and I would never get use out of it. I would like an E-collar but sadly cannot afford it. I know socializing her with other dogs is the real solution but I am not in the position where I can do that. Due to family circumstances I don't have my license so I can't take her anywhere. Boo has been to Pet smart and PSP and did fine with the other dogs there as long as they didn't come and greet her. But she rarely goes.
My thinking is that she was more worked up since I had been working with her, then people she knows and gets excited for came in to the yard so she wanted to greet them. Then a puppy comes up to her in her yard and she got much more defensive since. What can I do to get rid of this problem? Can you give me some more tips that might help?
Boo is great with people and she goes to the basketball court with me where a lot of people are at, she also gets daily walks. She is very well known in the town and people really like her it is just this one problem with the dog that came up.
Please help! BTW no bunny hugger trainers. I am not interested in being a treat dispenser, and I already know it wouldn't help anyway.
