Does your reflux occur immediately after eating?

Hi All,

Do those of you who have classical GERD of too much acid and/or a weak LES valve have symptoms occur generally straight away after eating? Or does it begin hours afterward? In my case, I generally feel fine for about two hours after eating, and then the pain and reflux begins. Eating actually makes me feel better.

That said, I've been diagnosed with GERD and prescribed Nexium. However, also have a lot of general bloating, and it got me to wondering if I produce too little stomach acid or and wondering if the delay in symptoms is caused by too little acid.

I really do want to avoid taking the drugs, but I need to understand it more before I make the decision to.

Thanks in advance.

I hate taking Nexium too & sometimes wonder whether it's working. I don't get pain as such- just this awful coughing/throat clearing- which is quite uncontrollable & keeps me awake far too often. Mine seems to be at it's worst about 3 hours after a meal I'd say. Sipping warm water helps a bit I think- maybe it neutralizes things a bit? I don't know really. I get a bit of nausea too & it doesn't seem to matter what I eat. I think the bloating is all part of it- & it seems worse at the end of the day. I find taking an Antacid like Gaviscon about 30 minutes before I lie down helps a bit too! Best of luck to you! ;)

Hi, I'm not yet sure, but think my GERD is from too much stomach acid and a weak LES. I've been taking Nexium for a year and it's completely helped me without any side effects.

My symptoms were always much worse as my stomach emptied, usually a few hours after eating, often I would have stomach pain in addition to the reflux. At night my reflux was so bad I was aspirating on stomach acid, mistook it for asthma for a while :(. Eating something usually helped, and getting up in the middle of the night to do so was the norm.

Art, have you tried supplementing with enzyme tablets or even apple cider vinegar? The tablets can be very helpful if you are not producing enough stomach acid to begin with. Also changing what you include in your diet can help as well.

(For me, adding enzymes and/or ACV never helped, and going to a "bland" diet only made my reflux worse, which is why I think I just make too much acid to begin with!)

Definitely try changing things up in your daily life if you haven't already, it can make the difference in being able to manage symptoms and having to take a med to control them. Good luck!

I have had this for about 5 yrs. -Very same as you. Tried everything and
nexium has worked wonders for me. I can't go without it. (I hate medicine, but I have to take this) It is the only thing that helped I tried others. There is a great coupon to print out for Nexium also. Good Luck

Thankyou all for your comments and input.

mellowfish, I have tried ACV and supplements and it does seem to help.

I've also tried the test where you take a a small amount of bicarb soda in the morning and wait until you belch or burp. In theory, if you have too much stomach acid, you should belch within a few minutes; if too little acid, it should take a long time. I didn't belch for about 20 minutes.

Along with the delay in symptoms appearing, all this leaRAB me to the theory that I produce too little stomach acid, rather than too much and drugs that limit stomach acid production will make it worse. Of course, the doctors don't want to hear about this. It's a simply equation to them..reflux=too much acid=PPI's, even if you have a myriad of other symptoms like bloating, nausea wind etc.

Anyway, thanks for your comments, and would appreciate if anyone else have any input.

No. Mine happens a few hours after eating. Always.
Hope this helps. I've had this for yrs.

If you are getting acid reflux while eating or immediately after eating, then it is likely that you will benefit by eating more of the so-called 'alkaline' fooRAB. See this post for details:
