Does wildlife photography work in B&W? What genre of photography is this;

It's not my photo. I found it while trying to find examples of Ilford XP2 developed in Rodinal.

Note that the lens used is a Noctilux...that helps explain the elegant softness of the picture.
 
I would say it depends on the background and settings. Example, that picture you posted looks like it would fit in more with black and white as opposed to color, it has an eery feeling about it, which is why it is better in B&W. but say it is in the jungle, or a dead field in africa, I think it would go better in color.
