Does UNLOCKING core just mean overclocking the processor or are there real physical

cores being unlocked? I thought of getting a good amd phenom II X 2 555 processor but many say that in the dual core processor there are two locked cores and they must be 'UNLOCKED'. Does 'UNLOCKING' just mean overclocking the processor to get the performance of a quad core OR is there a real physical cores being unlocked to get 4physical cores? Thanks in advance.
