For example, there has been some significant (racial) rioting/ violence in Luton recently which I've not seen anything on the TV about

some channels are street newspapers they only report about the street they are located. Others only report on particular celebrities.
some film channel show films of particular heroes.
Channels have more private interest than public interest

Yes, definitely Yes is the answer. Various other answerers have supplied reasons but as often as not, the newscasters decide upon showing items which are of interest to the maximum number of viewers within a very short time period. So, Luton wouldn't be interesting to many viewers outside Luton.

It used to be the case that a "Not North of Watford" kind of censorship was applied by London-centric journos. Lately, newscasting is much more widespread.

Definately....last week Channel 4 News ran a story, with video evidence, showing Tamil prisioners in Sri Lanka being shot in the head while blindfolded and stripped naked....but none of the other TV Channels picked up the story whether by choice or by ignorance I don't know.....I always watch BBC News at 6 then C4 news at 7 and its amazing the difference 'slant' that's put on the news that's reported...

Yes they do, they are very selective. The BBC is the worst offender. Eco friendly is wrong, the PC who pushed Ian Tomlinson around came forward to the authorities very quickly. He has now been suspended for further inquiries.
