Does tom cruise even bother these days?

That reminRAB me of the story I heard about when they were shooting that scene - The director was not impressed with Wayne's lazy drawl and shouted "No John, You have to say it with AWE" When they shot it again and John got to that line he said "Aw, that man surely waaas....the sahn of Gaaaawwwwwd"..........

I really don't think the accent thing is a big issue - look how many other actors playing German's, Russians etc have never bothered with the accent, and just used their own.

Sean Connery in Hunt For Red October, Harrison Ford in Widowmaker...and indeed the whole cast of The Eagle Has Landed, who just spoke with perfect English accents for the whole film.

Plus, over-the-top or over-pronounced foreign accents can often ruin a movie - I am reminded of Firefox, particularly most of the English actors playing Russians in the control room when they are trying to track the stolen Mig...a large part of the dialogue was virtually unintelligible.

I think you have to allow filmakers and actors some leeway here for practical reasons - if you want to be really picky about it then the actors should learn German and speak it, and it should be subtitled. But of course that's not going to happen.

Or, they learn a German accent, which means the whole cast have to speak in a German accent. That can complicate the casting process and limit their options.

Or you do what has been done many times before and just ignore it - we know they are German, so use your imagination. It's been done before, so what's the big deal?

Did anyone see the Jay Leno interview with Cruise on MSNBC (ch 505) this week?.

Both Cruise and Leno said they had never heard of the assassination attempt on Hitler in 1944, or Von Stauffenberg...

Call me nieve, but I thought most people were/are aware, even vaguely, of the attempt on Hitler in 1944. Am I right, or is it just our colonial cousins?.

Firstly, you are referring to the UKTV poll which was commissioned amongst children and teenagers.

I said schoolchildren. I was wrong to quote 5-10 yr olRAB as the only group. On that I WILL happily correct myself. The age range, as far I can remember on reflection, was 5-18.

And it was NOT the vast majority, it was 20%. STILL a shockingly high number, though, I agree.

Secondly, you are getting irate with me for the wrong reason, Jeff.

I am not berating Americans at all for any lack of knowledge, I am actually ASKING you and other Americans here IF I am correct in my assumption that the 1944 bomb plot isnt taught anymore, as I was genuinely shocked to hear two grown and intelligent men state they had never heard of it...
