I originally attributed these symptoms to a lower back strain, but now I wondering if this has something to do with GERD.

I have been having the following symptoms off and on:

1. Aches and pains in the upper chest
2. Horseness
3. Tightness in the chest--almost asthmatic, but not bad enough for that
4. A feeling like a cold is coming on, but it never arrives.

A few weeks ago, I drank a big glass of Metamucil. 10 minutes later it felt like I was having a heart attack--a burning pain in the upper chest. Then it happened again tonight. Big glass of Metamucil followed by chest pain. I drank some milk and walked around, a symptoms gradually subsided.

Does this sound like GERD? I am 39.

It does sound like you may have GERD. All of those symptoms are commonly the result of GERD. I've never heard anyone say that Metamucil is a trigger, but if it's citrus-flavored it could certainly cause an acid flare up.

You might consider trying a two week course of PrilosecOTC to see if you notice any improvement - seeing your doctor would be a good idea as well.

Its weird timing but I went to my Gastroenterologist only 3 days ago and he told me that Metamucil actually makes GERD much worse. He graduated from Yale 40 years ago and was a medical Gastro professor at Yale also. He laughed when he thought of all the doctors who tell patients with GERD to take Metamucil. He said it was crazy. I hope this helps you.
