does the wii act as a dvd player as well?

I'd like my Wii to be able to play DVDs, but I don't find it essential. I can go upstairs and watch DVDs if I want, but sometimes I may want to use it as a DVD player so it would be something that I'd want.

cant you just run it through winavi or something into an mpeg?

i usually just do that and stream it to my tivo, that way i don't have to go through the process of burning a disc etc

I read somewhere that due to the alignment of the laser used to read the discs, that it'll only read a little over half the surface of a DVD, so while it uses DVD format discs, it can't read a whole movie due to hardware issues. I don't know why they would design it this way, but I've also heard the thing about licensing the codecs to play DVD movies driving the price of the unit up.

no
tried a cd - nope
cd-r - nope
dvd - nope
dvd-r - nope
dvd+r - nope
dvd+rw - nope
dvd-rw - nope

as of right now, it will only play gamecube and wii discs

kinda stupid because even my saturn will play cd audio discs

no, just go buy this in addition to a wii:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4910374

the tv at which my wii will be set up has an old sony dvd player, a newer philips that plays everything, a ps2, and an xbox with dvd remote.

i dont need another player

even VHS was around for a few years after DVD-Video came out.

but with DVDs, there's DVD-Video, and DVD-ROM, and a hell of a lot more types of media are using DVD compared to what used VHS back in the day (which was just movies).

Yomsain?
