Does the T-mobile LG Optimus T require a data plan?

I have the samsung behold right now but i really need a new phone. i cant find any phones on tmobile that are better than the behold but dont need a data plan. i cant get on because its too expensive. the optimus says it does when i go to upgrade my phone but when im just looking at the normal website it doesnt say anything about a data plan
