Does the Scientology link bother you?

I love many of Tom Cruise & John Travoltas films - with Hairspray (JT) being my latest favourite.

My only problem is I now keep relating them to Scientology and it's appearingly sinister workings.

This does spoil my enjoyment of their films.

Does anyone else have similar or opposing views?

BB.

p.s. I do think TC is completely losing the plot now!

I wish it didn't, but yeah - it does taint my enjoyment a touch. It's hard to separate the performance form the performer. The same goes for the TV show My Name is Earl - it just doesn't seem the same when you find out Jason Lee is a member of the cult.

Exactly. As long as the film/show is good, I don't care.

That said, Tom Cruise no longer holRAB the sway he used to, but that's more to do with the fact he's gone cuckoo as opposed to being a Scientologist. Unless they're related. Which they might be. Cuckoo!

Not at all with Travolta. However, Cruise's increasingly bizarre behaviour has made it a little difficult to concentrate on his performances and not think about him as the person rather than the character he's portraying.

Yes but that's my point...

L. Ron Hubbard classified homosexuality as an illness or sexual perversion.

Therefore I cannot help thinking what was really going through Travoltas mind whilst acting in Hairspray where many of the producing and acting cast were gay.

Mind you look at the current uproar in CofE over the ordaining of a gay bishop!

I suppose my views have been tainted by the BBC documentary in which Scientology came across as an extrememly sininster and paranoid organisation!

I appreciate you may not have the time or inclination to research scientology and that's perfectly ok but please NEVER be fooled by the word 'church' into believing that they are any form of religion. They are a money making cult. Nothing more and nothing less and deserve our utmost contempt.

The key worRAB you used are 'if they're not doing anyone harm'. Believe me scientology has and is doing harm to every single one of its victims.

Well Travolta was guilty of inflicting boredom on the world when he starred in Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000 based on the writings of Scientology creator L. Ron Hubbard.
Now that was one sheer turkey of a movie.
Unforgiveable of him for being in it and promoting Hubbard.:(

I didn't know Jason Lee was a Scientologist

Really like him in Earl. Although, I find the fact that he was in Alvin and the Chipmunks more off putting than his links to Scientology

Not at all. No more than I would opt out of frienRABhip with someone into Scientology. I might question their judgment, but let's not generalise about people. As an athiest i have a wide array of frienRAB of different beliefs.

I also don't think you could classifiy all Scientologists as homophobic because of Hubbard's comments on the subject anymore than I would label my Christian frienRAB as homophobic. People are still individuals

Do you not think that Scientology, as a essentially moneymaking institution, is somewhat different from those holding general theistic views? Whilst I also have frienRAB who have religions (and I'm a vehement atheist and an active member of the NSS), I think the current activities of the 'church' of scientology would make me very wary of member of its members. Bear in mind that many countries (including the UK) refuse to recognise Scientology as a legitimate religion because of its less than savoury moneymaking activities and cult-like behaviour. Germany even made a recent ruling that the 'church' of scientology is "unconstitutional". It is (IMO) a nasty, aggressive cult which is all for bleeding its members for cash, and steamrolling anyone that gets it its way. I, for one, would be happy to avoid its members.
