does the Palm Treo 700w for verizon require a data plan?

my phone broke and my friend told me she will sell me her old Palm Treo 700w and said it wont need a data plan (it's a pretty old phone), but im not sure.

Verizon's policy is that all smart phones require a data plan, whether they're new or not, and whether you are starting a contract or are already in one.

So the key thing is - does Verizon consider it to be a smart phone? It's 5 years old, so you probably won't know until you ask them. Their cheapest smart phone data plan is $15/month.

Well now days all smartphones that you put on your plan requires a 29.99$ data plan but that's for like current phones but idk if that same rule occurs for older smartphones like you are getting so you might want to call verizon and check with them just so you clear on everything and you get no suprise charges on your bill
