Does the Old Verizon envy require a data plan?

So my old phone died, so I tried a new one but that one is terrible too! I found a friend who has the old version of the envy for verizon. Now, I hear that the new envy requires a data plan for 9.99 a month but does this one require a data plan, since its old? Also, can I even use it the old envy? Thanks
