Does the Iphone work in England?? ?

Do I get roaming charges? Do I have to unlock the phone? Im really confused about it. I am considering getting an Iphone, and I am leaving for an trip to England soon, so I was curious, is it a big hassle? etc. I dont know much, I would appreciate it if I could get as much information about it? Thanks :)
